Xeriscaping that turns thirsty lawns and tired beds into low-water landscapes with rock, mulch and drought-tolerant plants suited to Colorado's dry climate.
Xeriscaping is a style of landscaping designed to use as little water as possible. The word was coined by Denver Water in 1981, and it has been a natural fit for Colorado yards ever since. Instead of large areas of grass that need constant watering, a xeriscape uses drought-tolerant plants, rock, gravel, mulch and smart layouts that group plants by how much water they need. The work can include removing old sod or overgrown beds, preparing the soil, laying weed barrier, placing rock and edging, and planting. Done well, a xeriscape still looks green, colorful and full of texture. A yard cleanup is often the first step to clear the area before the new landscape goes in.
Colorado has a semi-arid climate, and keeping a traditional lawn green through hot, dry summers takes a lot of water and work. Xeriscaping cuts down on watering, mowing and fertilizing, which saves time and can lower your water bill. It also handles local conditions well, since the right plants are built for intense sun, dry air and cold winters. Many homeowners switch to xeriscaping to deal with patchy grass that never looks good, slopes that are hard to water, or areas the sprinklers don't reach. It's also a way to add curb appeal with natural stone and native plants that fit the look of the region.
A xeriscaping project starts with a look at the space: how much sun it gets, how water drains, and how you use the yard. Think about the look you like, such as rock gardens, mulch beds, native grasses or a mix, and whether you want to keep any existing trees or plants. Mark sprinkler heads and irrigation lines, and know where utilities run before any digging happens. If your HOA has landscaping guidelines, check them early. Old grass or overgrowth may need to be removed first, and the site should be clear of furniture and decorations. Planting goes best when temperatures are mild, so plan your timing with the seasons in mind.
