What Is Fence Staining?

Fence staining is applying a protective, tinted finish to a wood fence. Unlike paint, stain soaks into the wood, which helps it guard against moisture and sun while letting the grain show through. The process starts with cleaning the fence to remove dirt, mildew and old flaking finish, then letting the wood dry completely. Loose boards or popped nails can be addressed before the stain goes on. The stain is applied evenly to boards, posts and rails, including the edges that are easy to miss. You can choose a transparent, semi-transparent or solid stain depending on how much of the wood grain you want to see and the color you like.

Why Is Fence Staining Necessary?

A wood fence faces some of the harshest conditions on your property. Along the Front Range, strong sun bleaches and dries out wood, wind and snow add wear, and quick temperature swings make boards expand and contract. Without protection, wood turns gray, cracks, warps and eventually rots. Staining slows that process down, keeps the fence looking rich and even, and helps it hold up longer before it needs replacing. It costs far less to stain a fence than to replace it. Many homeowners stain a new fence once the wood is ready, refresh an older fence when the color fades, or stain before selling to boost curb appeal.

What Is Required For Fence Staining?

Fence staining needs dry weather, both before and after the work, so the wood can absorb the stain and cure. New wood often needs time to dry out before it's ready, and older fences need a good cleaning first. Pick a stain color and opacity, and let us know if your HOA has rules about fence colors. Clear plants, decorations and anything leaning against the fence, and trim back vines or bushes that touch the boards. Sprinklers that hit the fence should be turned off around the time of the work. If any boards are damaged, it's best to replace them before staining so the finish looks consistent.
